Born in 1956, I was always interested in painting, but my life was much more dominated by my scientific interests. So I studied mathematics, later philosophy with the emphasis on analytic philosophy and logic, but at times also history of arts and other disciplines. After my master in philosophy I started working in one of the first AI research groups in Germany, were I developed techniques and systems for automated reasoning. My doctorate and habilitation was accordingly in computer science.

Between 2005 and 2007 I took a break from science and got a taste of what it means to do painting more intensively. However, at that time I was not well-prepared for a sustainable shift, so I turned back to university. Because of my scientific work and (mostly) administrative obligations at the university my painting activity was very low until about 2015.

Then I decided to give it a fresh start, maybe also motivated by an exhibition of a famous painter in autumn/winter 2014/15 in Munich, which was very inspiring. Since then my painting activity has constantly intensified and has now resulted in a considerable collection. As it turned out I am doing much better on larger formats than on smaller ones. So most of my paintings are of larger size. Actually, for this exhibition we have selected paintings of such a size only. This also fits better with the style of this presentation and makes it more consistent.
